Hope is not a strategy: The danger of relying on hope for start-up success

In the past few months, I've spoken with several start-ups that are already on their way, with a decent product and a few satisfied customers. But in conversations with the owners, I noticed that their internal processes - including sales, customer success, and product development - are clearly due for the next step. They no longer align with the company's growth goals.

What's interesting is that the owners recognize this and acknowledge the need for improvement, yet they fail to take action. Instead, I often hear them expressing hope for more customers, product improvement, or changes in the market. The result is that they continue on the same old path without making any changes.

In my career, I've learned (sometimes the hard way) that hope is not a good strategy. If you want to create value and achieve your growth strategy as a start-up, it takes hard work, not just hope.

"Remember, hope is not a strategy - it's just wishful thinking."

So, what can you do to avoid this trap?

Here are some tips:

  • Periodically check if your growth strategy is still up-to-date and in line with the market.

  • Regularly review your internal processes. Are you focusing on the right ones?

  • Be critical of yourself and your organization. Is everyone still in the right position?

Another option that works well is to regularly consult with a mentor, people in your network who have built up a wealth of knowledge and experience throughout their careers.

You could also consider setting up an advisory board - a small group of experienced individuals with diverse backgrounds whom you report to and consult with on a monthly basis.

Don't fall into the hope trap! Instead, take a proactive approach and engage experienced people to achieve your start-up's growth goals. Remember: hope is not a strategy - it's just wishful thinking.

Ik kan Joost als mentor van harte aanbevelen. Wat hij schrijft is mij uit het hart gegrepen.
